Chit Maung, U

(b. Okkan Burma, 1 Apr 1905) . Burmese Baptist theological educatior and church leader.

A member of the Kayin (Karen) tribe, Chit Maung was trained to be a lawyer but entered the ministry instead. He received his theological education at Northern Baptist Theological Seminary in Chicago, Illinois, United State, graduating in 1953. He served as head master of a mission high school from 1935 to 1942 when the Japanese occupied Burma. After World War II, Chit Maung led in the reestablishment of two major theological institutions located at Insein, eight miles north of Rangoon (Yangon); Karen Theological Seminary (Kayin Baptist Theological Institute) and Burma Divinity School (Myanmar/Burma Institute of Theology).

Chit Maung's service to the church was  conclusive in scope and most confined to one race or denomination. He was active in the Burma and earlier years, the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA). He played an important role in the upgrading of theological education in Burma and was one of the Asian leaders who brought the Association of Theological Schools in South East Asia (ATSSSEA) into existence in 1957. After retiring officially in 1977, Chit Maung continued to be active in the ministry of teaching and preaching.
